Random Musings Sorted by Fandom :

1. So, basically, here's the thing about the Horatio Hornblower Mutiny/Retribution series:

Captain Sawyer breaks my heart. Now, I understand that he's 'the villain' or whatever, but he's just an incredibly sad, angry, crazy man, and he is acted to perfection , and the whole issue with him is very cleverly manipulated so that the audience feels the same way that Horatio does toward him, roughly. First we have exasperated resentment and fury, and then growing unease and frustration, and then pity and empathy and toward the end he's even been redeemed to the extent that I find myself admiring him.

The battle scenes where he is just clearly a sad child are just some of the most incredibly poignant I've seen.

But here's the other thing: Hobbs? Loves him. Really, truly, loves him. The intimacy of his relationship with Sawyer is just -- whoa, man. *Whoa*.

It actually makes me feel a little weird, in that while Horatio/Archie or Horatio/Bush (yes, lifeinwords I kind of see that, too now...) are all readily apparent, Hobbs/Sawyer is basically canon. And yet, for reasons I have yet to discern, there seems to be ...no Hobbs fic? I'm new to the fandom, so there may be reams I just don't know about. But I'm just sayin'.

There is back story there like nobody's business. For real.

2. And here's the thing about Martha Kent: she makes me so sad . For whatever reason lately when I think of her, I think of American Beauty and find myself saying "Poor Martha", but there's no real indication that she's unhappy, per se. It may just all be a function of my on going Kent-related issues.

Also, I really don't dislike Lana....or Lexana, but for whatever reason it feels to me like Lexana only really works in my head in terms of the summer post-apparent-Chloe death and Clark being consumed by the cave vagina.

3. Sam and Josh are like the bitchier big brothers of Dan and Casey, though both Dan and Casey can on occasion be bitchy.

Also: would anything in the world be funnier than Sports Night fic written in Faulknerian style?

I think not. (I may be in the minority on this one).

4. Darla=Lindsey, just...blonde. And with girlparts. And a vampire. But other than that. Yes.

5. Things I covet:

The song Wild by Poe, and either a Faith icon or a Darla icon. I do so love those girls...*smiles happily* Also, warmer socks.

For Faith...hmm. Rebel Girl'd be a good cap, but probably cliche and I can't even THINK of anything for Darla. I leave it up to your capable and BEAUTIFUL mind! *snugs*

Yeah, romantic Lexana only works for me in the sense of Lex's gay alien boyfriend having dumped him and then disappeared, Lana's best friend/sister/lesbian lover having been moidered, and the two of them taking comfort from each other. One thing I will give them, Lana has been *nice* to Lex. Given his terrible year it's not surprising he likes her.

...so I'm guessing I'm in the minority here, huh?

I just think --

Dan stood by the window, looking down -- down -- down toward the ribbon of asphalt which twisted and turned through the city of his father and his father's father, which their feet (as his did every day) pounded hard against the ground and their hands reached up toward the sun, the violent, glowing, red orb that hung above them all spattering light down, yes, they reached up toward the sun as they piled one brick after another higher and higher still until each brick became part of a wall and the wall became part of a building and Dan stood there, now, in a building much like the ones they had built, and he looked down and out, and in his heart there was a clench and a twist, and he turned his head and rested his cheek against the window and stared -- stared at Casey, and Casey:

"Dan?" said he and Dan:

"Casey?"

and his voice was rough, and filled with years, and wants and sun and bricks, like his father's voice and his grandfather's voice, and he when he heard it in himself, he repudiated it, as he repudiated his father, as his father had repudiated him, and he thought of his brother, who lay cold and still beneath ground, and upon whom the light from the red, red sun never fell, and --

"Dan, are you going to write anything today?"

....I'll stop now. Because this could go on for quite some time.
