SGA fic: nine things john has loved and lost*
*and two things he's learning to trust will be there when he needs them

I am OMG so excited that this is up. It's been my baby for the past few days.

Summary: Putting past poisons gently to sleep
Notes: This story is mainly a labor of love on Lyra's part. I did the easy part, which was write it, but she made it happen like this, with all the beautiful footnotes totally realized. She was totally amazing about it. Now, here's another thing: you really do have to read the footnotes. And it's best to turn off your pop up blocker, or else you won't be able to, or maybe your browser will do what my safari did before I realized that my pop up blocker was on, which is have a footnote rave. Also, thank you to Caro, for being so excited about it. And, the summary is from yet another Patrick Park song (yes, Slod, I am still waiting on my sweet whiskey Jesus.)

Muh. *blinks a moment* Not really sure what to say except that I really, really liked it, and I adored the last footnote, that Rodney went after him three times, and it took him those three to get it.

Jo from The Facts of Life?! Uh, huh. Not that I'm reading this, no, because -- oh wait, I read this, I just don't watch, okay, carry on! ;)

I like it, Nif, I really do. The footnotes are lovely. It's probably just my hormones that make me want to cry everytime I read good Atlantis fic these days, don't you think?

And Mrs. Coniglio should be his MOMMY. *sniffles*

Oh man, that was so cool. It took me like, three times to really get the knack of how to read this, and it was awkward, but when it clicked it so *clicked* and Lyra is the awesome for the coding and you are the awesome for the writing and I just love you both so much right now. Well. Always. But especially now.

That was gorgeous!!! I absolutely loved it! You can see where John's "abandonment" issues come from. The footnotes were awesome! They were amusing and revealing at the same time :)

This is gorgeous. The footnotes are inspired, and as much as the story itself, I love that this truly wouldn't work as anything other than a web page with popups. It's its own kind of joy :-)

This is just amazingly vivid and gorgeous. What an inspired idea with the footnotes. They were understated, revealing, and not distracting. And Rodney at the end...!

Your John voice/POV is wonderful, and it just makes me tingle. *This* is the John I love, this John that you seem to know and write so well, in this fic and Bullets by the Door also. Thank you for the story. :)

i loved it...all the differnt little glimpses into john's life...and, of course, the footnotes!!! i have a thing for footnotes (which i tend to consider the unconscious of the text :-)

thank you!

Oh wow, this was great. I loved it. I love the fact that Rodney doesn't let John push him away.

Great job!

I am so pimping this on atlantis_alive.

One of the oddities of SGA is that they've given us so very little of John's backstory, even though he's the central character. I find your story very plausible, more so than what they're liable to give us in canon, which dollars to doughnuts is going to involve the violent and/or accidental death of his mother or only sibling, because that's the way TPTB's minds work.

I do wonder why John's father didn't get John his own dog, after Tootsie. But then, I love Corgis.

This feels very true to John to me. Everything he's ever loved he's lost, so he tries to leave first.

And I love the format, makes it much more powerful then if it were all laid out linearly.

You should totally be excited! This is good stuff.
good enough, just not transcendental: look at all the plans i madewalkingshadow on December 2nd, 2005 03:18 am (UTC)
this is incredible, an incredible feat of a story. footnote #23 made me cry, and john named his guitar sue, and i adored mrs. coniglio—i can just see her falling in love with this bright little boy who's so alone, who she wants to help so badly but is moving away again and she knows he'll always have to. footnote #32 (she always beat him. every single damned time.) is a perfect illustration of why i love footnotes as much as i do. so is the way you tied together #s 23 and 38, the follow-up from the heightmeyer visit. and the ending—everyone else in john's life faded away, but if anyone's going to stick it's going to be rodney, rodney who would (and obviously DOES, heh) actively resist being lost. this was brilliant and beautiful. thank you for it.

Okay, the footnotes totally worked fantastically. I love the entire thing. I mean, seriously *love* it. Fantastic rendition of John.
