SGA Fic: Bullets by the Door
So, I don't know if this counts as fusion or *what* but I had a long talk with seperis about how John reminds me of Prince Andrew in War & Peace, which then led inevitably to fic, as I wrote to prove my point. I feel like this isn't even really a story, so much as me proving a point. But here you are.

Title: Bullets by the Door
Author: nifra_idril
Summary: Afghanistan was fucking beautiful.
Thanks to seperis, and to Patrick Park for the title from his song of the same title. Title, title, title. Woot.

Just amazing and so John, once again your story is canon for me and makes me actually glad that TPB haven't given us more background info on John.

Wow. That's really quite amazing. I spent much of the story being annoyed by John and his whole rebel without a cause act, and I kept thinking he was something of a cliche.

But you really turned that around at the end, it's like you made him grow up, which is unexpected and fantastic. I love being suprised like that. It happens so rarely.

I think I forgot to leave fb for this before, but even if I did, I should add this, which came to me just now as I was re-reading -- there was that story that was posted somewhere on the official site, backstory for John about the black mark, etc, and this story is absolutely what I wanted it to be and it so so wasn't. Just gorgeous, that final upwelling of joy.

This was really wonderful. So very real and full of exquisite details. Thank you.

How can anyone even give a shit about that kind of thing when every single breath John takes here is one that helps him protect the guys around him, helps him take care of his men, helps him learn the lay of this land so well that he could be set down anywhere within twenty clicks of their position and find his way back in time for a meal.

That is astoundingly, incredibly John to me. I can't explain it, but that sentence right there sums up John's attitude towards the military and his men.

phenomenally perfect, real, and absolutely necessary to have any understanding of the Character. It's like you reached inside him and took out the parts they haven't shown us yet. I play Sheppard in an RP here on LJ, and have been looking for something, anything to connect me, to show me. This is *it*. Whatever they come up with in canon, it will never be this perfect.

This was briliantly done. I felt like I was in John, not-feeling as he did, seeing what he did. The last section where he saves the other pilots, then almost dies to feel real was almost heartbreaking.

Best damn pre-Atlantis John fic PERIOD.
God, if only he can keep hold of it, he’ll always have this in him, this laughter, this calm, this love. If only.
That line really hit me hard. Just GREAT.

Such a wonderful and powerful story. Sorry, I have no words. It's just perfect.

I loved John in this story.

That was beautiful. Stunning imagery. Like someone said, it seems so real yet surreal. I can see the mountains pushing up and the black formations in the sky. It kind of reminds me of that really abstract piece in Fantasia, where the multi-color landscape is sort of heaving to the music (weird comparison, I know). Not to mention, wonderful character insights:

"I miss you so much it hurts," Jessica writes him, but it's buried between all of these paragraphs

"Shepperd, you're a damned machine," and he's one of them, just like that.

and that's how he gets the reputation for starting trouble before he even does a damned thing.
